KM 653.1 (listed under Mainz), seven year type; joint coinage issued for Mainz, Hesse-Darmstadt, Nassau-Saarbrucken and Frankfurt.  One cent size silver coin, with the coat of arms of each of the participants on the obverse.
An archbishopric was established at Mainz in 747; Charlemagne used it as a residence and mint city.  The archbishops were recognized as Presidents of the Electoral College and Arch-Chancellors of the Empire in 1356.  Mainz was ceded to France in 1797, and France annexed all the lands on the left bank of the Rhine in 1801.  The remaining lands were secularized in 1803 and divided among three German states.
