The vital statistics: one 1871 German States - Prussia Thaler coin, KM# 500, silver (0.900), 18.52 g (0.653 oz.) weight, actual silver weight 0.5359 troy oz., 32.5 mm (1.28 in.) diameter.
This thaler was struck in commemoration of the German victory in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871, a conflict between the Second French Empire (later the Third French Republic) and the North German Confederation led by the Kingdom of Prussia. Lasting from 19 July 1870 to 28 January 1871, the conflict was caused primarily by France's determination to restore its dominant position in continental Europe, which it had lost following Prussia's crushing victory over Austria in 1866.  According to some historians, Prussian chancellor Otto von Bismarck deliberately provoked the French into declaring war on Prussia in order to draw four independent southern German states—Baden, Württemberg, Bavaria and Hesse-Darmstadt—to join the North German Confederation; other historians contend that Bismarck exploited the circumstances as they unfolded. None, however, dispute that Bismarck likely recognized the potential for new German alliances, given the situation as a whole.  Following the conclusion of the war Bismarck forged the unified German empire.  (From

This coin is in AU condition.  Fine details of the coin's designs are crisp and sharp.  Only the highest surfaces of the coin's designs show evidence of wear.  In particular, the face of the reverse seated allegory for victory shows smoothing.  There are scattered hairline scratches in the reverse field.  The hairlines of the obverse bust of Wilhelm show slight smoothing, and there are fine scratches scattered across the obverse as well.
