1855 FREE and HANSEATIC CITY of HAMBURG Silver "SCHILLING" with LAMINATION ERROR
    Description
This is a very nice, extremely low mintage, silver,
    "Shilling"
    or 12 Pfennigs from the
    "Free Hanseatic City of Hamburg"
. It was struck at the Hamburg mint in 1855.
Quite, unusually, the planchet this coin was struck on was not prepared correctly. The metals that formed the alloy were not mixed sufficiently. After it was struck and entered circulation, the metals have separated, in this case dramatically. This is what is known as a
    “Lamination Error”
    .
Hamburg was founded by the first
    "Holy Roman Emperor"
, Charlemagne, in the ninth century. In 1241 it joined with Lübeck to form the
    "Hanseatic League"
and with Bremen continued in that hereditary, oligarchic, organization until the
    "League"
    ended in 1862. Officially an
    "Imperial Free City",
it eventually became a part of the German Empire in 1871. It struck city coins almost continually from about 1250 AD until World War I put an end to the
    "German Empire"
    .
    Weight: 1.08 Gram, 16 Millimeter, .375 Silver. Mintage: 112,000.
As a comparison, the famous 1909-S V.D.B. Lincoln Cent had a mintage of 484,000 pieces.

    The Coin:
As silver of just .375 purity quickly turns dark in circulation, you can see this one did not circulate long. It has just a touch of wear and remains mostly bright white. The remarkable lamination error is quite unusual. Fully original, it has never been cleaned. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
